Fleece

Icelandic sheep are one of the world's oldest and purest breeds of sheep. They are excellent grazers of a variety of pastures and are very individualistic. Some are extremely social and request their daily scratches, while others spread out in the pastures and are more shy, but wonderful mothers. The lambs are perfect from the time they are born; everything in proportion and covered in large curly locks. Icelandic fleeces come in a variety of colors. It is a less typical fleece in that it has two layers. The fine undercoat (thel) and the coarser outercoat (tog). Thus a combination of colors often occurs and the fiber can be left natural, without the need to dye it. You can choose to separate the two fibers or spin them together. It is also an excellent fiber for felting projects. This fiber is also low in lanolin; when it is washed it only loses about 30 to 35% of its weight compared to other fleeces which can lose as much as 50 to 55%. All prices listed are per pound.
